How Can I Become a Teacher at BS11?

Perhaps you were—or still are—a student at BS11 and were inspired by one of our teachers to consider this profession yourself.

If you are interested in becoming a teacher at a vocational business school or a business-oriented upper secondary school (Berufliches Gymnasium) in Hamburg, you can find detailed information by downloading the relevant brochure.

Based on a commercial apprenticeship or a one-year commercial internship, you can pursue a degree in Business and Economics Education (Handelslehramt).

As part of your studies, you will be required to complete a four-week orientation internship, and a one-year core internship at a school. After successfully completing your Master’s degree, you will enter a 1.5-year preparatory service (Referendariat).

How and When Does BS11 Train Future Teachers?

  • every year, we supervise up to six Bachelor students during their orientation internship (August/September) and
  • four Master’s students (two tandems) during their core internship, which runs from April to the following January.
  • for the preparatory service, we accept up to four trainee teachers per intake (February 1 / August 1), which means we typically support 8–10 trainee teachers simultaneously.

How Do I Become an Intern or Trainee Teacher at BS11?

Bachelor students in their second semester who are interested in completing an orientation internship at BS11 should apply with a CV between January and May of the respective year.

Core interns participate in a digital introductory session organized by the State Institute for Teacher Training. There, tandem partners indicate their preferred schools, which in turn present themselves online and offer opportunities for individual conversations.

After these meetings, schools submit their preferences regarding subjects sought and tandem configurations. The Institute for Business and Economics Education at the University of Hamburg (IBW) is responsible for assigning tandems to schools.

Applicants for the preparatory service in Hamburg apply directly to the Hamburg Institute for Vocational Education and Training (HIBB) for either

the February 1 or August 1 intake. The State Institute (Landesinstitut) will then assign candidates to schools.

At BS11, we are proud to offer a large and experienced team of mentors who are eager to share their expertise with the next generation of educators.
Our school offers a wide range of educational programs and subjects, making it an ideal training ground for both the orientation phase and the preparatory service.

We look forward to receiving your application, which should be sent to our teacher training coordinator:
