Are you eager to start training as a legal assistant, but despite your best efforts haven’t been able to secure an apprenticeship? Then the professional qualification programme within the Hamburg Training Model offers you a valuable opportunity to pursue your goal.

What is the Professional Qualification?

The professional qualification in the Hamburg Training Model is a transitional educational programme between school and vocational training. In cooperation with law firms, we offer a one-year qualification pathway designed to prepare you for an apprenticeship. The programme typically begins after the summer holidays or in February each year. You apply for the qualification programme directly through our school. Please note: This programme is unpaid.

Our shared objective is for you to secure a recognised apprenticeship position as a legal assistant within one year—ideally at the law firm where you complete your internship. Time spent in the qualification programme may be credited toward your apprenticeship. A transition into formal vocational training is possible at any time within the one-year period.

What can I expect from the Professional Qualification?

Following a successful application process, you will sign an educational agreement with our school. You will attend regular vocational school classes on two days per week. On the remaining three days, you will actively search for an internship with the support of a designated mentor.
You have six months (a probationary half-year) to find an internship placement. The next step is to convince the law firm during your internship to take you on as an apprentice, with your time in the qualification programme being recognised. You have up to one year to achieve this.

What can I expect from the Professional Qualification?

To apply, you must
1. be generally no older than 20 years,
2. have your primary residence in Hamburg,
3. submit the following application documents:
-Cover sheet including full address and contact details (email, phone number)
-Letter of motivation explaining your interest in the legal assistant profession
-CV
-School certificates (ESA, MSA, and if applicable, certificates from subsequent education such as AV-Dual, Higher Commercial School)
-Internship certificates, if available
-Consent form allowing the transmission of relevant personal data to the Employment Agency and training providers (available on our school’s website)
-Proof of unsuccessful apprenticeship applications (e.g. rejection letters or confirmation from the Youth Employment Agency)
