Welcome to the program – your start at vocational schoo

The school year for future Social Insurance Clerks begins each January. This later start allows you to first familiarize yourself with procedures and responsibilities at your training company and to complete initial in-house training sessions.

Your first day at school 

On your first day, regular classes do not yet begin. Instead, you will meet your new classmates and receive essential information about the school and the guidelines that will accompany your training.

Your welcome begins in the school’s assembly hall, where the school leadership will greet you. Afterwards, you will proceed with your class and homeroom teacher to your assigned classroom. There, you will be briefed on block schedules, lesson and break times, timetables, grading policies, regulations regarding absences, and codes of conduct (see: Our School section). This introductory day is designed to foster a positive and supportive learning environment and to familiarize you with all key procedures.

Finding Your Class

In the school’s entrance area, you’ll find electronic displays or noticeboards listing class assignments and room locations to help you quickly navigate to the right place.

The training of Social Insurance Clerks is based on the official Training Framework Plan and Curriculum Framework, both of which can be downloaded from our website.

These documents define the general and profession-specific content to be covered over the course of the three-year program. In total, the instruction amounts to approximately 1,440 hours.

Vocational school instruction is organized in learning blocks. During the three-year training period, four teaching blocks are scheduled.

At present, only one textbook is required for instruction, which is provided free of charge by the school. However, many apprentices and companies opt to purchase their own copy. This allows learners to mark important sections, underline content, and add handwritten notes—actions not permitted in school-owned copies.

Please note: Borrowed school textbooks must be returned at the end of the training period in a reusable condition. Otherwise, the replacement cost will be charged.

For legal studies, it is recommended that apprentices acquire a paperback edition of the German Civil Code (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch – BGB). This text is not provided by the school and must be purchased individually.

Midterm Examination

The midterm exam takes place in the middle of the second year of training. The exact date and location will be communicated to you by your training provider.

It covers Practical training content from the first year (based on the Training Framework Plan) and School curriculum content from the first academic year (based on the Curriculum Framework). Tested subjects include:

1. Insurance and Financing
2. Benefits
3. Economics and Social Studies (WISO) – 60 minutes

The “Insurance and Financing” and “Benefits” sections refer to the company-based training content. The WISO portion is based on 75% content from the vocational subject Economics and 25% from Social Insurance Studies (Blocks 1 and 2). The midterm exam is written only. A detailed overview of the midterm examination procedures for your specialization is available on the website of the Federal Office for Social Security (BAS) in Bonn.

Final Examination

At the end of the training period, apprentices take both written and oral final examinations.Written Examination Subjects and Duration (according to § 14ff. of the Examination Regulations for Social Insurance Clerks)

The oral exam consists of a 30-minute customer consultation simulation, for which the candidate is granted a preparation time of no more than 15 minutes.

Early Final Examination
If the training period is shortened, the written portion of the final exam is administered in early December of the previous year. Since the final school block concludes around December 20th, it is not possible to fully cover the WISO curriculum before the exam date.

Registration for vocational school is handled by the training company.

Please ensure timely registration of your apprentices for vocational classes—ideally before the summer holidays—using our official registration form (downloadable from our website). The completed form should be submitted to the school office.

Absence Policy – Social Insurance Program

For all students in the Social Insurance Department, absences due to illness must be excused through the training company. Please use our official absence form for this purpose.

In case a short-term leave from class is necessary for other reasons, a request must be submitted in advance either by the training company or the apprentice directly to the school.
