Spanish

Why learn Spanish?

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world after Chinese, and the second most widely used language in international communication—particularly in business and politics—after English. It is the official language in 21 countries and the native tongue of more than 400 million people.

Speaking Spanish allows you to communicate with millions of people around the globe, both personally and professionally. It opens doors to discovering some of the most breathtaking and diverse landscapes—such as those found in Chile—meeting fascinating people, engaging in conversation, and exploring both ancient and modern cultures.

Course Structure

Spanish is offered as a newly introduced foreign language beginning in the preparatory year. It is taught four hours per week from the preparatory stage through to the Abitur (university entrance qualification). Students may choose Spanish as either a written or oral subject in the Abitur examination.

What do you learn in Spanish class?

The focus in the preparatory year is on everyday communication, music, fashion, and all things related to Spanish cuisine. In Grade 12, the curriculum broadens to include travel, professional and cultural aspects, selected Latin American countries, and regions or cities in Spain. In Grade 13, the emphasis shifts to in-depth preparation for the Abitur topics, which change annually.
Throughout all levels, grammar exercises accompany the various thematic units.

Spanish is considered relatively easy to pronounce from the outset, as there are only a few pronunciation rules. In other words: start speaking right away!
