Understanding the Purpose of Mathematics


Have you ever thought the same way about math? Wondered what it’s all really for? And why the problems seem so abstract? Then you’ve come to the right place: At our school, we recognize that many students share these thoughts. Although mathematics is compulsory for the Abitur, we are committed to connecting required content to real-world problems. In doing so, we aim to show how mathematical tools can be applied to solve practical, everyday challenges.

Our mathematics instruction is rooted in real-life relevance. It allows students to experience firsthand how math can be used to interpret, understand, and manage phenomena that are not inherently mathematical in nature. Students are encouraged to form their own reasoned judgments on important questions.

Mathematics and Career Orientation


By integrating real-world contexts and examples from the professional world, math instruction contributes to career orientation and helps students make informed decisions about their future paths.

Most university programs require solid math skills. This is especially true for fields such as engineering, economics, and the natural sciences—but also psychology and medicine. Mathematics is therefore a fundamental component of higher education readiness.

At the St. Pauli Vocational Grammar School with a business focus, math instruction in Grade 11 begins with an intensive review of essential middle school concepts. Even at this stage, lessons are tied to practical applications, demonstrating that real-world problems often require a solid grasp of mathematical theory to find solutions.

This approach helps us answer the frequently asked question in math class: “What do I need this for?” While theoretical knowledge remains essential, our curriculum emphasizes applied tasks that clearly illustrate how mathematical skills are both useful and relevant.
