Biology

Biology is a general education subject, which means that the content taught at our Vocational Grammar School is identical to that at academic grammar schools.

Given that our students come from a wide range of school types and backgrounds, we first focus on establishing a common foundation in the introductory phase to ensure all students are equipped for the demands of the qualification phase.

In Grade 11, the focus is on cells and their metabolism, which means we delve into the microscopic world—a topic we are able to explore not only theoretically but also practically in our state-of-the-art science laboratories.

The qualification phase follows the state-mandated central Abitur curriculum and is divided into semesters, each covering a different theme:

  • Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Ecology and Sustainability
  • Neurobiology and Human Self-Understanding
  • Evolution and Future Challenges

Molecular genetics introduces students to highly topical issues—for example, the development of pharmaceuticals, which has significant economic implications.

Ecological literacy is vital for future decision-makers in business and policy. Topics include material cycles in ecosystems, which are often explored through hands-on projects. For instance, our students regularly carry out fieldwork, conducting ecological water assessments of the Elbe River and Outer Alster. These include chemical water analysis and the comparison of their findings with official data—encouraging critical evaluation of scientific methods.

Neurobiology turns the focus inward, helping students understand physiological processes: Why can’t we resist the reflex hammer during a medical exam? How do neurotoxins affect the central nervous system?

Evolution, while it appears to be backward-looking, actually provides insight into how organisms—including humans—adapt over time to changing environmental conditions. It also allows us to make informed predictions about how life on Earth might continue to evolve.

In short, biology is a deeply engaging subject that can be chosen as either a written or oral Abitur examination subject. Biology is taught for two hours per week in Grade 11 and three hours per week during the qualification phase.
