AVDUAL – Dual Vocational Preparation

What is AvDual?

Since August 2011, vocational and career preparation has been restructured within the Hamburg school system. Students can now combine school-based and workplace learning in a dual format.

In vocational preparation, we focus on school-age youth who do not yet have an apprenticeship placement. Enrollment in vocational preparation is not open to direct registration; rather, placement is arranged through the Youth Employment Agency or partner district schools that collaborate with our institution.

The AvDual program is attended by young people who have either completed a basic general education (formerly: Hauptschulabschluss) or an intermediate school diploma (formerly: Realschulabschluss), as well as those without any prior educational qualifications. Through vocational preparation, these students have the opportunity to earn their first general education certificate.

“No diploma without prospects”: The goal is to achieve readiness for vocational training, gain career orientation, and subsequently continue either academically or professionally, for example, with an apprenticeship contract in hand or a place at a higher education institution.
