Ankerlicht/Anchor light
Educational Monitoring with Ankerlicht
The Ankerlicht project supports young people through a one-to-one mentoring programme in which they meet with their mentors for 90 minutes each week over the course of one year. Taking place on the school premises, mentors provide assistance with homework, exam preparation, and the search for internships. They help students set and achieve individual goals and support them during key transitional phases—such as moving from the International Preparatory Class (IVK) into mainstream classes, from school into vocational training or higher education, or when changing schools. Mentors act as bridge-builders, door-openers, and guides. They create a safe space for questions and enable young people to experience Hamburg’s culture.
Educational mentoring goes far beyond academic support—it changes lives. Young refugees face immense challenges in their new or temporary home: language barriers, cultural misunderstandings with peers, an unfamiliar school and vocational training system, and uncertainty about their future. Mentors provide not only linguistic and cultural mediation, but also stability, guidance, and hope.
