The Housing Congress for Everyone
We are proud of our thirteen apprentices and students from the Vocational School of St. Pauli, who presented their outstanding project results on the topic “Living in the Future” at the “City. Countryside. Living Space?” congress organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation on October 16, 2025.
Their presentations impressively demonstrated the immense value of young people’s perspectives. The trip to Berlin formed part of a larger project in which three classes from the banking and insurance departments engaged in an in-depth exploration of the topic.
From analyzing the criteria young people apply to housing and home ownership, to designing a complete financing plan, and comparing renting versus owning—including the appropriate financial safeguards and insurance solutions—the students produced remarkable results. Particularly striking were the social insights they gained and the innovative approaches they proposed.
Sustainability also played a key role. It became evident that both home ownership and even rental costs have become unaffordable for many young people in metropolitan areas. At the same time, the aspiration for a detached single-family home remains strong—an ideal that can hardly be reconciled with limited land availability, sustainability goals, and urban living.
The two intensive days in Berlin marked the grand finale of this project: in addition to attending the housing congress, the program included a visit to the Bundestag and a discussion with a Member of Parliament.
A heartfelt thank-you goes to everyone who made this project possible—and to our dedicated apprentices and students, who have shown just how much future potential lies in young ideas!
