German
What do you learn in German class?
German is one of the three core subjects at the Vocational Grammar School. In German class, you will refine your language skills and deepen your knowledge of both language and literature. Two goals are particularly important to us: first, that you produce your own original work in which your knowledge and skills are reflected, and second, that you engage with the topics beyond the classroom setting.
During your school years, you will write journalistic articles, poems, short stories, plays, radio dramas, video scripts, visualizations, and much more. Additionally, you and your classmates will attend theatre performances, poetry slams, lectures, and literary exhibitions where artists and experts offer unique perspectives on German class topics.
Content of the Introductory Phase (Grade 11)
A key milestone in the introductory phase is the opportunity to earn the German Language Diploma (DSD)—a certificate confirming your proficiency in the German language. This diploma can, for example, enhance your job or university applications. To earn it, you must pass both a written and an oral exam, for which you will receive thorough preparation. This not only builds exam confidence but also strengthens your skills for the Abitur exams at the end of upper secondary school.
If it becomes clear that you need extra support—such as improving your writing skills—we are here to help. You can also take advantage of external tutoring services offered by our educational partners.
Class topics include:
- Reading and interpreting short and long texts, such as short stories and novels
- Analyzing how people communicate, the challenges involved, and how to overcome them
- Expressing and defending your opinions in both discussions and written texts
- Exploring how different media (e.g. newspapers, television, social media) present information and how they influence the public
Content of the Qualification Phase (Grades 12 and 13)
In this phase, you can choose to study German at the basic or advanced level—depending on your academic performance. You will also decide whether to take your Abitur exam in this subject, with the choice between a written or oral examination.
German instruction continues in class groups and follows the centralized Abitur curriculum set by the city of Hamburg. These topics are standardized across all upper secondary schools and rotate every two years.
